Introducing the Works of Famous Artist Carl Bloch
We are incredibly pleased to announce that just this week we added the most famous works of Danish artist Carl Bloch to our site. Bloch’s work is incredibly well-known among members of the LDS Church due to the widespread use of his paintings in published materials and church buildings for the past 40 years. The Church has also produced films depicting scriptural accounts of Christ’s mortal ministry, using Bloch’s paintings as a reference for the color, light and overall setting, as well as the movement of the actors in many of the films’ scenes. One of the most notable examples of this can be seen in a number of scenes in the movie The Testaments of One Fold and One Shepherd.
In 1973, President Thomas S. Monson (not president at the time) traveled to Denmark to see 23 of Carl Bloch’s paintings of the life of Christ in person. President Monson said of his experience, “When I see a Carl Bloch painting, I feel… the spirit of Jesus and His ministry come alive. I want to follow His example, and, as a result, the depiction becomes a vibrant lesson of life.”
When viewing Bloch’s paintings, most Latter-day Saints feel the same way as President Monson did. And even in Bloch’s own time, art critic Karl Madsen said of him that he “reached higher toward the great heaven of art” than anyone else. Bloch even said of his own work, “God helps me… and then I’m calm.”
We hope to allow anyone who enjoys the inspired work of Carl Bloch to purchase his art. It is our hope that it will bring the spirit and love of Christ into your home for all to enjoy.
