Nauvoo Remembered – Painting by Jon McNaughton

This painting shows the Nauvoo Temple in the fall. And although it is a beautiful time of year, we know hard times are ahead. It wouldn’t be long before the saints would be forced to leave their homes and come west to build their new homes in the valley of the Great Salt Lake. Painting by Jon McNaughton.

Nauvoo Remembered – Painting by Jon McNaughton Mockup

This painting is based on a true setting from an old daguerreotype picture of early Nauvoo. The artist, Jon McNaughton, wanted to take the picture and bring it to life. Nauvoo means city beautiful and was the Zion of the early saints. At its time, it rivaled Chicago as the largest city in Illinois. Jon chose to paint this scene in the fall with its fiery red leaves to signal the coming of winter. And although it is a beautiful time of year, we know hard times are ahead. The temple is lit by the light of heaven and the deep clouds of a storm approach. It wouldn’t be long before the saints would be forced to leave their homes and come west to build their new homes in the valley of the Great Salt Lake.
